4 Possible Side Effects of Veneer Treatment

As you might know, veneers are one of the finest cosmetic dental services you can get. The shells’ porcelain allows them to treat a wide range of smile flaws! Still, a would-be patient could wonder: What are the potential risks of getting veneers? There’s no such thing as a risk-free dental treatment, after all. The good news is your Fort Worth dentist is here to answer this question. So, just keep reading to learn four possible side effects of veneer treatment.

Poorly-Shaded Veneers

Dental labs tailor veneers for a specific patient’s smile, ensuring they look great. Even so, there’s always a risk of treatment giving you poorly shaded shells.

The main issue is that lab workers are human; they can make certain errors and mistakes. As a result, your final veneers may have a shade that doesn’t match surrounding teeth. That would cause your treatment results to “stand out” from your smile, degrading your looks instead of improving them.

Inflamed Gums

The ideal veneers don’t affect your gums; they just fit snugly over your prepped teeth. However, your own shells could inflame your gum tissues if you’re unlucky.

Don’t forget that veneers are foreign objects; they aren’t naturally part of your mouth. Given this foreignness, your gums may need time to adjust to the shells. They could even suffer minor inflammation if the initial placement was rough. Should that happen, your dentist can provide a follow-up checkup to confirm the issue’s underlying cause.

Sensitive Teeth

While they rarely do, veneers can sometimes make teeth sensitive. This effect is something you should note before a possible treatment.

The fact is that teeth must be “prepped” to receive veneers. More specifically, a dentist must remove some of their enamel for the shells to fit well. This process can make some teeth sensitive, as a lack of enamel may expose a tooth’s dentin layer. A patient would then need to compensate with pain medicines, follow-up treatments, and similar methods.

Injured Tooth Pulp

Well-placed veneers don’t (or at least shouldn’t) harm your oral health. With that said, the placement process carries a slight risk of tooth pulp injury.

Remember, a dentist must remove some of your enamel to place veneers. This removal could injure the pulp in some of your teeth if it isn’t done well. Should that happen, you’d likely suffer major tooth damage that requires a root canal, tooth extraction, or some other treatment. The best way to eliminate that risk is to get a dental crown instead of a veneer.
